Wat is mindset nu eigenlijk? De mindsettheorie is van Carol Dweck. Mindset is het Engelse woord voor ‘overtuiging’. Het staat voor de manier waarop mensen denken over zichzelf en in het bijzonder over hun intelligentie en kwaliteiten. Er wordt onderscheid gemaakt tussen een vaste mindset en een groeimindset. Mensen met een vaste mindset geloven dat hun persoonlijke eigenschappen vaststaan. Je bent met een bepaalde ‘hoeveelheid’ intelligentie en kwaliteiten geboren en daarmee zal je het de rest van je leven moeten doen. Mensen die sterk denken vanuit een groeimindset daarentegen geloven dat ze zichzelf steeds kunnen blijven verbeteren en ontwikkelen. Je talenten zijn slechts het startpunt; je kunt steeds blijven groeien door hard te werken en ervaring op te doen (Dweck, 2006).
