Christmas 2024 Has Arrived
December 25, 2024
Christmas is here—a religious holiday celebrated on a national level in Curaçao, where over 80% of the population identifies as Christian, 68.2% of them Catholic. From a religious perspective, Christmas marks the moment when God became human to free us from sin and offer us the hope of eternal life as long as we believe in Him.
Yet, too often, we lose sight of this meaning. Whether because we don’t pause to reflect or simply don’t believe, the spiritual essence of Christmas is overlooked. What remains, however, is a widely celebrated holiday—one that’s not just for family but also a time of peace and love for our neighbors and humanity.
It’s an odd phenomenon. Shortly after the New Year begins, we quickly return to the routines of our individualistic, material-driven society. But I choose to believe that a shift is slowly emerging—a growing awareness that things can’t continue as they are.
We need a new social contract—one that redefines how we treat each other, our planet, corporations, and technology. Only then can we hope to embody the true spirit of Christmas, not just during the holiday season but in how we live every day.
