Navigating the Waves of Transition: A Struggle Against the Tide

Navigating the Waves of Transition: A Struggle Against the Tide

September 13, 2024

Yesterday, I intended to write about schools adjusting their schedules due to the unbearable September heat. It’s not the usual seasonal temperatures we’ve grown accustomed to; climate change is now undeniably felt. Whether classrooms need air conditioning is no longer just a debate—it is a necessity.

I also planned to complete the sales tax today. I set aside time because I knew there would be hurdles to overcome before I could even start—for instance, two-factor authentication (2FA). I wonder how many people are familiar with that term. Technology, as it stands, is not designed with people at the center (Society 5.0); it is still in its 4.0 phase, where tech dominates humans rather than empowering them.

These are just two examples of how we find ourselves in transition and grapple with it. We struggle, partly because it all seems to happen to us, and we don’t know how to handle it. People attempt to ignore the changes, carrying on with "business as usual" until we can no longer ignore them. We will not make it like this.

Take, for example, the infrastructure on the island's western side. We know it is unprepared to withstand the heavy rains, yet I hear no plans to address it. The sea levels are rising, but we need concrete plans. One thing is sure—the wave of transition is upon us. The question is, will we ride that wave, or will it swallow us whole?
