Nu Reel: A Critique of Simplistic Political Narratives

Nu Reel: A Critique of Simplistic Political Narratives

August 27, 2024

Recently, I came across a short video reel from a Spanish-speaking young man whose nationality remains unknown. In his brief message, he passionately criticized the political class for promising voters higher wages and jobs in government. He argued that politicians have nothing of their own nor produce to give but merely take from those who produce and redistribute to the poor. According to him, the political class is a plague that should be kept as small and limited as possible.

It is easy to resonate with these sentiments. Many people, frustrated with the political establishment, might nod in agreement. However, we must acknowledge that this reel is only 90 seconds long, and in such a short time frame, it is nearly impossible to delve into the complexities of these issues. The problem with using videos like this is that they can be populist, offering overly simplistic solutions to intricate problems.

To properly evaluate these statements, we need to place them within the context of the social contract. Societies establish governments to manage and govern. This includes providing protection, maintaining order, and enforcing laws—hence why the state has a monopoly on using force. The government also safeguards property rights, among other responsibilities, which are crucial for the so-called productive class.

Yes, there are shortcomings and excesses within politics and government, especially in Curaçao. We are not blind to the flaws in our system that need addressing. However, the narrative presented in those 90 seconds is highly individualistic, one of the root causes of many societal issues. Moreover, this very productive class often has significant influence over who governs. This way of thinking is outdated and does not serve the common good.

Indeed, every government should strive to be effective and efficient, avoiding waste wherever possible. But instead of resorting to rhetoric that accomplishes nothing, we should aim for a better government that truly serves its people. Dismissing the entire political class as a plague may be a catchy soundbite, but it does not contribute to constructive solutions. Let us leave such rhetoric behind and work towards meaningful change.
