May I present to you my friend Ronald Rouse. We were introduced ten years ago at a meeting of the Curacao Leadership Forum. He was only talking about sustainable development. Up to that moment I did not get the subject of sustainable development. But from that day on I started to study this. It all led to the UNESCO Chair Caribbean Small Island Developing States in 2010.
Two day ago he asked me the following question: "
What is a social entrepreneur? Social entrepreneurs are individuals with innovative solutions to society’s most pressing social problems. They are ambitious and persistent, tackling major social issues and offering new ideas for wide-scale change. Rather than leaving societal needs to the government or business sectors, social entrepreneurs find what is not working and solve the problem by changing the system, spreading the solution, and persuading entire societies to take new leaps.
To illsutrate this have a look at CNN Heros:
Dinha Veeris is a local social entrepreneur.
Segni Bernadina is also one. He started an academy for talent.
Do you know others? There is a young male who runs a house for youngsters on his own in Banda Riba, Fuik. I wish I knew his name. And of course Ronald replies: "The young guy at Fuik is Shayron Maduro".
Next week I will discuss SIDS and sustainable development.
