The Sisters of Roozendal: A Farewell After 182 Years
June 24, 2024
On Sunday, June 23, 2024, a poignant religious ceremony was held at Brionplein to bid farewell to the Sisters of Roozendal. This marked the end of an era as these devoted women closed their mission after an incredible 182 years of service.
The Sisters of Roozendal were invited to Curaçao and Bonaire by Mgr. Niewindt in the 19th century. They dedicated themselves to building a stronger society, primarily through education. Their impact has been profound, shaping generations and leaving an indelible mark on the community. However, with their aging population and a lack of new members joining the order, the time has come for them to depart.[1]
As we reflect on their departure, it is essential to understand the whole meaning of this loss. The values and principles the Sisters instilled in us through their tireless work in education and community service must not be forgotten. Have we fully realized what this means? Are we ready to continue our legacy in a world increasingly driven by materialism? I have my doubts.
Moreover, have we shown adequate gratitude for their contributions? In recent years, there has been a negative narrative surrounding the Catholic Church, especially concerning its historical role during the era of slavery. The Church issued an apology in 2019 for any possible negative impact during that period. Scholarly works have criticized the Church's actions, with some claiming that its role was merely to pacify slaves and Black individuals.[2] However, little attention is given to Goslinga's dissertation on Mgr. Niewindt titled "Emancipation and Emancipator: The History of Slavery on the Leeward Islands and the Work of Liberation."[3]
On a personal note, I find an ironic connection to this history. I attended Mgr. Niewindt College for my primary education, and my father served as the long-time principal of the Goslinga MAVO. As a child, I would walk from my college to my father's school, unaware of the deep history of this coincidence.
The departure of the Sisters of Roozendal signifies more than just the end of their physical presence. It challenges us to reflect on their legacy and ensure that the values they imparted continue to thrive in our community. Let us honor their contributions by embodying the principles of education, compassion, and community service they so dearly championed.
