The Struggles of the Middle Class and the Impact of Tourism on Housing
September 8, 2024
As someone privileged to move in various social circles, I’ve recently noticed a troubling trend: the middle class is struggling more than ever. Even those holding down two jobs find it increasingly difficult to make ends meet, living from paycheck to paycheck. This struggle, however, often goes unnoticed. Why? Because they still manage to take vacations, such as going on a cruise. I often wonder how they manage to afford such luxuries, but one thing is clear: behind the scenes, they struggle and suffer, particularly regarding housing.
Many are poorly housed, yet they can only afford the bare minimum. Housing has become a critical issue, one that is being exacerbated by the rise of tourism. Many homeowners now prioritize renting their properties to tourists because it’s more profitable. Additionally, tourists are increasingly buying homes, driving up property prices and making it even harder for locals to secure affordable housing.
This growing problem cannot be ignored. If we don’t address it soon, the middle class will continue to be squeezed out of decent living conditions, and the effects on our social fabric could be long-lasting. Solutions must be found before it is too late.
